Danny was my secretary.

He would type my letters (1970′s!).

And he’d make a mistake on almost every one.

“Danny, do you check these letters for errors?”

Well, I can always correct them.

“That’s not the point. Correct them before you give them to me.”

OK, why say this?

Many people un-consciously believe that to correct an error after you point it out, shows how valuable they are. How much they are doing to help you.

My modern Danny sends me passwords or site URLs that simply do not work.

Each time with a different reason as to why not, and an immediate correction.

Why not check before giving it to me?

Because then it would be perfect and I would not notice just how valuable that person was.

A supposed clever ploy

is really

Too annoying to do repeat business with.

Check your work before handing it to someone.

A friend of mine in England asked me to buy him an ‘American’ wallet /billfold.

“Why?”

“They are designed for American money which is less wide than our money.

It results in a slimmer wallet.”

On my next visit I brought him an ‘American’ sized wallet.

And charged him the $12.95 I paid for it. (Approximately £8 – € 9.40)

Not a lot of money, compared to the cost of the trip.

Maybe equal to 3 or 4 cups of coffee at a fancy coffee place.

He was surprised I would do this.

Then he thought about it and said,

“How clever. If I do not pay anything then I’d be really reluctant to ask you for anything ever again.

This way I feel OK.”

Charging and /or paying for something is often the far better thing to do, than just saying “Forget it.”

If you give credit when people do something that merits credit, they stay with you.

Not think they are better and leave you.

You’re the only one who gives them credit - and they know that -

they’d find themselves cut off from credit if they went anywhere else.

Because most people don’t give others credit.

They keep it for themselves.

We all compute what-you-say as compared to what-others-say to us that day, the days before, and the days after.

And we note that we have not changed all that much when we are with you,

yet we seem to be getting a lot more “benefit of the doubt” and a lot more ‘good feeling’ when we are with you. (Also therefore, no swelled head.)

So we can easily see that this is the way you are and not necessarily the way we are.

IE: I did not change all that much when I am with you but my credit level did rise.

So I’m sticking with you.

Works with: employees, husbands, wives, children, friends, associates, neighbors, etc.

————————–

Water waits to be pumped up for our use.

It is not mean, nor does it have anything against you.
The water responds exactly to your actions.
No more, and NO less.

And that’s where you don’t get it.

Start pumping /working and the water starts to rise. Results start to happen.

Keep on working — with no (visible!) results and the water keeps rising.
However the instant you stop pumping, the water starts to recede.
Sick? Tired? Discouraged? Fed Up?
It doesn’t matter, the water recedes.

When you get ‘motivated’ and try again, the work is the same as the first time you pumped the water.
And you say “This is never going to work. Here I am, my sixth time pumping, and still no results.
Nothing is happening.”

So, what do successful people do, that you don’t?
They don’t stop pumping.
No matter the reason.

———————–

When I ask you a question to which I know the answer, I manipulate you.
Teachers do this to school children.
With good effect.

So, why say this?
If you wonder whether someone is trying to manipulate you,
first determine, “Do they already know the answer?”
If you think they do, ask yourself:
“Why do they ask, if they already know the answer?”

You quickly see the reality.

Here is how to avoid the manipulation.
Just say:
“There’s a reason why you’re asking this question, could I know the reason?”

Your tone must be very off-hand for this to work.

————————-

Almost everything is either an M or a W.

The left side of the M (or W) is January, the middle is July/August and the right December.
Tourism is a W.
High travel time is December/January and July/August.
Low travel times with the highest/best discounts are March/April and October/November.
Airlines and ships give discounts at these times.

Ok, so why say this?
If business is low /slow in August (M), you have a couple of things you can do.
Go on vacation, take it easy and come back when things are up.
OR
Keep going, knowing business is down, but not down to ‘nothing’.
I started in a business (an M) in 1967.
Montreal hosted Expo 67, a World’s Fair, over the summer months!
Within three years I was the first President of the first Canadian subsidiary of a world wide Corporate Group.
Guess whether I took the summer off.

So, determine whether your business /situation is an M or a W and then choose to ignore it.
And succeed.

You can’t fear the unknown.
If it is truly unknown.
So what you do is populate the unknown with a bunch of known-and-undesirable things.

Then you choose to fear that one of the things you put there, may happen.

Here There Be Tygres
Many years ago this was written in the part of the map yet to be explored. The presumption was that, because no one goes where Tigers are, they would not notice that that part was simply not mapped.

What if the unknown is presumed to be good?
What kind of scary thing that evokes in us!
Because we are fear based.
“Better safe than sorry.”
True, if those are the only two options.

Cartoon:
Panel 1 – Child draws monster
Panel 2 – Child runs away from monster!

Next time you start to fear, … whatever
Do a reality check and see if the fear is your creation.

————————–

99% of the time, 99% results is fine.

99% returned calls
99% money made
99% attempts to apologize
99% results in an exam

99% of the time, … 99 is fine.
(Exceptions are only 1% of the time.)

OK, so?
How’s your life doing right now?
How much are you getting of what you want?
(Give yourself an honest answer!)

Hmmm, maybe by investing only 99% of your time /energy /efforts
you then end up with 99% of what you want.
Compare to what you actually now get.

Of course you should have more, do more, be more, …so why aren’t you?

The next time you’re about to go the extra mile, stay late etc. remember:
99 is fine.
