To make a hamburger you always start with the bun.

Then you put some condiments ( mustard, relish, onions etc.)

Then the meat.

Then maybe some more condiments (ketchup, mayonnaise etc.)

Then the other part of the bun.

 

And that’s exactly how to address /scold /correct someone’s mistake.

First a greeting of some sort.

Then a compliment.

Then, and only then, what you really want to say.

Especially if it’s something less-than-good.

Then, maybe another compliment.

Then a farewell.

 

Hey, Charlie, I was just coming to see you!

That was a great job on the Jones account last week.

I notice on your latest memo you need to change the promised dates of delivery.

You know we simply can’t meet them.

Anyways, nice seeing you again.
