It’s not polite to stare. Especially at people who feel deep emotion (sadness, hurt etc).
Yet we form our understanding of others in great part by ‘reading’ their expressions.
We know ‘happy’ because we have many happy people around us. And it’s OK to look directly in their face as they express happiness. Same for some of the more usual emotions.
Sharpen your ability to quickly notice what emotions are happening in a person.
Look at ‘real’ people who actually experience these emotions.
But NOT actors.
Look at television news broadcasts that show real footage from places where some sort of victory (Sports, Wedding etc.) or tragedy (War, Flood etc.) is happening.
Determine what emotion that person is experiencing, then say to yourself: THAT is exactly how a person expressing that emotion looks like.
And make a strong mental note to yourself.
Different people have different ways to express the same emotion. So make it a point, over time, to look at several people who all express the same emotion.
Soon you ‘glance’ at someone for only a second and know exactly how they feel about something.
Very useful in boardrooms, sales, boy /girl-friend situations etc. don’t you think?
