It’s literally impossible to build a staircase that goes only up. Or only down.
It is impossible to construct a street that goes only one way.
Oh, you can attach a sign that says one-way travel, but it itself allows both ways.

So it is with absolutely everything!
How do you know this / is ‘uphill’ unless you understand it’s also ‘downhill’.
Here, let me take away the ‘uphill’ part: ___
Oops! I’ve also taken away downhill at-the-same-time.

The ONLY way we can understand something is by also understanding/seeing its opposite.

So it is with you and your current success /failure.
You can not know success or failure unless you also understand its opposite.
To know you’re failing is to know what success is and to see you’re not doing that.
(To know success is to know failure and see you’re not doing that!)

The end result is you already know what to do to succeed in every case you can see you’re a failure.
Otherwise you would not be able to identify that you’re a failure. Because failure as compared to what! It’s only uphill or downhill as compared to its opposite.

When faced with failure, remember you already know exactly what to do to succeed and it is in you. Let answers come to you from your memory of what you already know the opposite is.

57 Helicopter

First we blindfold you.
Then put you in a Helicopter and fly around for a couple of hours.
We land, undo your blindfold, give you a map and some money.
You’re in a village somewhere. The people speak your language.

What’s the first thing you do? (Play the game! Play the game!)

Right. Find out where you are.

And the next thing? (Play the game!)

Right again. Figure out where you want to go, in relation to where you are.

Then set out to go there.

However there’s one thing missing in this simple scenario.
The step between finding where you are and where you want to go.

It’s simple yet critical:
Accepting that you are there. And not somewhere else!

People believe they have no problem because they only drink a little, are only a bit lazy, or only lose their temper occasionally or, …well, you get the idea!
These people think they’re in a certain place and proceed to head in a direction that, if this were true, would get them where they want to go.

For those things simply not working — just verify that you, first and foremost, actually are where you think you are in that subject. Quite often that’s what needs changing. Nothing else.

Whenever something ‘always’ happens to you, relax. It means you are completely in charge of that situation.

Always late? Hmmm, let’s see now… From near or far, summer or winter, rush hour or not, alone or with others, and to various destinations, and you ‘all-ways’ manage to neutralize all the variables to arrive late.

Again.

Just managing on the income you have? Hmmm, let’s see now … gas prices go up, gas prices go down. Things go on sale, home appliances wear down and break. Cars need repairs. And so on. Yet you just, just manage to get by on your income.

Again.

NOT managing on the income you have? Hmmm, let’s see now… Are you always managing to be down a certain amount each month? Always averaging a certain amount down?

Again.

People always treating you a certain (un)acceptable way? Hmmm, let’s see now… that would be old people, young people, good people, people you hardly know, people with different backgrounds and so on. What do they all have in common? You. Always you. You are sooo flexible you can actually stay in the same state! You neutralize all the variables in an unconscious way. So unconscious, you don’t realize the subtleties of your own actions. Yet there’s simply no denying the repetitive-ness (and effectiveness!) of your own actions.

Again.

Choose one of the more obvious ‘always’ things in your life. Determine the benefit of continuing it. Then give yourself that benefit (without judging!) and that ‘always’ will vanish. (See # 45)

45 Problems

There is no problem without a benefit having that problem gives you.
A benefit you would not otherwise give yourself. A benefit ‘forced’ on you, so to speak.
A ‘problem’ is sometimes the only way for you to get that benefit.

A consultant friend would fall ‘sick’ every so often. And, being sick, would take time off. Legitimately. Guilt free. He determined the cycle was 400 hours. The next time he approached the 400 hour mark he took time off. And didn’t fall sick. So he felt guilty. So the next time he kept working. Yep, 410 hours and he fell sick. And ‘had’ to take time off.

Clearly his benefit was to rest, relax etc. And if he had to create a ‘problem’ to get that to happen, so be it!

Another friend split his pants. As a result he sat at his desk the whole day. And got things done from a sitting position. To his surprise he was more efficient and effective that way.

As a personal project, I talk to Heart attack people (for the past 30 years!). Almost every one says the heart attack served to change their life. For the good. They were doing too many wrong things or had a certain bad /non-profitable attitude they changed as a result of this ‘problem’.

A problem is there to give you a benefit you would otherwise not give yourself any other way.

Look for the benefit in your current problem(s) and give yourself the benefit no matter how silly, mundane or self serving it may seem.

Because you think the ‘benefit’ silly or not necessary, is why you have the problem in the first place. Do NOT judge the benefit, just give it to yourself! And the problem — being there simply to give you that benefit — will automatically clear up.

Years ago I created a series of courses teaching Personal Development.
I worked quite hard, opening five or six offices in as many cities.
Somehow, I was stuck there.
I even reread my own material (!) regarding goal setting /achieving. Surely I was missing something. Otherwise the whole concept of goal setting should be discounted.
I soon realized no one gets their goal until they decide what they’ll do AFTER they get it.
Normally we say “first things first” as in: First get your goal, then figure out what to do after.
Well, that’s NOT how it works. You get what you want only AFTER you determine what you’re going to do… AFTER you get what you want!

So I decided AFTER opening Canada, I would open the United States. I made a strategy book and, over the next two years, filled it with ideas.

I’m sure you know the ending to this.
I opened over 30 offices in Canada in those few short years.
Yet I never really opened many in the States. (Four or five)
And you know why: Because I never decided what I was going to do AFTER I had succeeded in the United States.
Because to get your goal, see, you have to decide ‘now’ what you’re going to do AFTER you get it. Get it?

Choose any goal you have yet to achieve. And decide what you’re going to do AFTER you get your goal.
