Do it

170 Micro Steps

We do so many things without thinking, we forget to use that very ability in us.

When you arrive at some stairs, you do not “shuffle” or make “tiny adjustments” just before stepping onto the stairs.
And you usually start the first step with a ‘preferred’ foot. (Always the right, or always the left.)

Now, if you think about it, this has many implications.

No matter where the stairs are, you automatically and unconsciously adjust your stride such that, when you arrive at the stairs you simply take-another-step.

This means you always automatically:.

A) Know where you are

B) See where you are going

C) Measure the distance between

D) Adjust your stride in a micro way

And you arrive at the stairs – at the exact distance and with the ‘correct’ foot in the proper position – to smoothly take that first step.

You do this every day, in every way, automatically. Why not take advantage of this built-in ability!

When you set a goal realize, from then on, your mind automatically and unconsciously adjusts your actions such that you ‘arrive’ at that goal. Automatically. Without thinking.

And it does this by causing Micro Changes in your actions. If  you  allow  it. Allow yourself to do (slightly) different things and you will achieve your goal smoothly, automatically and unconsciously.

  1. You covered this in a managers workshop I attended some years ago. I’ve never forgotten it and use it nowadays in group work I do with people recovering from alcohol dependency.
