Many years ago when I smoked, a friend offered me a Cuban cigar (Legal in Canada!). He only had two left. If I took one – and he did – there would be none left. So I politely refused and thanked him. That’s when he got mad at me. “What’s wrong with you,” he said. “Why can’t you give a little?” “But I am giving” I replied. “I’m refusing to take your last cigar, much as I’d like it.” “That’s exactly what I mean,” he countered, “By refusing me the pleasure of giving, you take away from me. Anyone can buy cigars. Not many can enjoy sharing their last one with a friend. You give me that by taking it.” Think of a child offering you something they made. Their increased
pleasure when you take it from them. Give by taking. ————————– These are related: # 71 Nice – 96 Habits – 109 Understanding
